The Road to Sustainable Sailing

Boat owners around the world face the challenge of balancing their love of the ocean with a responsibility to protect it.

Sustainability has been a major focus over the past several years. We have become more sustainable and better at putting nature first. There are many manufacturers who have taken good steps towards a greener footprint, such as the boost of electric cars, which are taking over more and more of our everyday lives. This is now also coming to the boating world. Boat owners around the world face the challenge of balancing their love for the ocean with a responsibility to protect it.

The ocean, which we all love, attracts boaters and sailors from all over the world. But with this privilege comes a great responsibility to protect and preserve our marine environment. Eco-friendly practices for us as boaters are not only a necessity, but a way to ensure our ocean remains healthy for future generations. Here are some key eco-friendly practices we as boat owners can adopt to minimize our impact on the marine environment:

1. Electric Motors:
Electric motors are one of the most environmentally friendly options on the market. They are powered by batteries and produce no direct emissions during operation. Electric motors are known to be quiet and require minimal maintenance. Battery technology is constantly evolving to make the electric boating experience better. By choosing a green engine, you as a boat owner can not only reduce your impact on the environment, but also gain benefits such as lower fuel consumption and noise levels as well as more reliable performance. However, it's important to note that technological advancements and infrastructure play a crucial role in the uptake of these green engines. Before making a decision, it's crucial to research which type of green engine best suits your boating needs and the current availability of technology and fuel infrastructure in your area. Green engines are not just a trend, but a key component in ensuring a sustainable future for boating and protecting our marine environment. By making conscious choices and investing in these technologies, you as boat owners can play a crucial role in creating a cleaner and more sustainable marine experience.

2. Waste management:
Proper waste management is essential to prevent pollution of the marine environment. Use dedicated bins for garbage, recycling and hazardous waste and make sure to dispose of it properly once you are ashore. Avoid throwing waste overboard altogether, as even small items can have harmful effects on marine life.
Usually, when we hear or see reports of plastic pollution in the oceans, they often refer to problems abroad. And when we walk along the Danish beaches and coasts, it doesn't seem as if huge amounts of waste jump out at us. This combination leads to many Danes not quite believing that we are facing an actual waste problem in our own ocean.
Unfortunately, the reality is different. Studies have shown that every third herring in the Great Belt has plastic in its stomach, and the same goes for 39% of cod in the North Sea. As many as 93% of seabirds have been found to ingest plastic. This leads to the obvious assumption that other seabirds face a similar fate.

3. Non-toxic Maintenance:
Maintaining your boat is inevitable, but choose non-toxic products whenever possible. Avoid chemicals and paints that contain harmful substances that can leach into the water. Use eco-friendly alternatives and make sure no hazardous substances reach the ocean.
When it comes to antifouling paints, almost all of them contain toxins that help prevent algae, mussels and barnacles from growing on the vessel, which is necessary for the vessel's maneuverability. However, the toxins are continuously released from the antifouling paint, so there are always active substances on the surface of the treated areas. These toxins are not only harmful to wildlife, but also to humans if not handled properly. The negative consequences can already be seen in many plants and animal species such as snails, fish and guinea pigs. Therefore, you should think carefully about which products you use, Hempel's biocide-free Silic One, a bottom paint that does not contain biocides, but at the same time does not compromise on quality. this is not an advertisement for Hempel, but we believe that their product is worth mentioning as this is another step in the right direction for greener sailing.

4. Responsible Anchoring:
When anchoring, avoid damaging coral and the seabed. Use appropriate anchorages and techniques to minimize damage to marine ecosystems. Also, use anchors with soft lead weights instead of hard lead weights that can cause soil contamination.

5. Wildlife Awareness:
Respect marine wildlife by keeping a safe distance from animals such as whales, dolphins and turtles. Avoid feeding wild animals as this can alter their natural behavior and damage the ecosystem.

By incorporating these eco-friendly practices into your boating experience, you can enjoy the beautiful marine environment while taking an active role in protecting it. Remember, every small step towards more sustainable boating makes a difference and helps preserve our marine ecosystems for future generations.
